no Supercross World Championship until 2002
The FIM Management Council convened in a meeting on June 23 & 24 in Geneva. The main points discussed and decisions taken are the following:

The Supercross World Championship will not be held in 2001. The FIM has decided, in agreement with the company Dorna Off Road, not to organise a Supercross World Championship in 2001, as the conditions for a solid and efficient running of a Championship of this importance are currently not met. FIM and Dorna Off Road are already working on a new strategy, on the sporting level as well as on the level of organisation, of promotion, marketing and television in order to hold the Supercross World Championship again on a new basis in 2002.

Dual Slalom Race Report by Double A Marketing

NORBA National #2 Snowshoe, West Virginia June 23

2000 UCI World Champion Wade Bootes-Trek/Volkswagen proved he is worth his weight in Gold, as well as why he wears the rainbow Jersey on Saturday night, as he was the winner of the Dual Slalom at Round #2 of the Norba Series at Snowshoe, West Virginia.

The slalom race was once again was held up to weather. Last weeks UCI Dual race in Vars, France was eventually canceled due to bad weather conditions. On Saturday morning, when the riders finally got to compete, things got off to a wet start in the

qualifying round. A light rain and a soggy, muddy course made for slow times and Wade qualified 10th overall.  With the results in hand, Wade commented that he would have one of the toughest brackets ever to make it into the finals. Wade also was still battling a slight injury he sustained in Slovenia at Round one of the UCI tour, when he crashed and separated his shoulder. Without the help of the Trek staff and Wades determination, he may have not even been in Snowshoe to compete. When the riders walked the course for the final, they found a completely new course, as it was totally dried out and race ready. Wade was very excited, as he liked the layout, and felt good. In Wade's first two rounds he met up with young riders Scott Ybara and Chuck Pitts. and had some easy runs. This was the end of that as he was next up against past Norba National Dual Champion Eric Carter - Mongoose/ Huyandui/Speed Stick in the quarterfinals. Carter won the first round with .56 second lead but Wade powered back in the second, taking .77 seconds from Eric and the overall quarterfinal round win. In the semis, Wade went up against Steve Peat, who he has had some great battles with in the past, but Bootes would prove to be too strong willed to be beaten this time around. This would put Wade into the Final with none other that current Norba Champion Brian Lopes - Fox Racing/GT Bicycles. In the first round, it was a classic back and forth battle among the sports top 2 riders, with Wade taking the advantage at the finish by a .43 second advantage. In the second round, Brian was on the faster course and had an excellent run, but was unable to beat the time difference, giving Wade his First Norba National win of the 2001 season. The win also put Wade into the overall leaders position in the series. Wade's next race will be this upcoming weekend in Park City, Utah for Norba Round #3.

MISSY THIRD, GLOBAL RACING REMAINS ON TOP

Vars, France (17 June 2001) - Another fine group performance by Global Racing, 16/17 June at World Cup round two, Vars, France, kept the team, well, on top of the world. Thunder storms on Saturday, 16 June caused the cancellation of the Dual race - the first time a UCI world cup race has ever been cancelled. On Sunday conditions for the downhill were not much better: rain, snow and hail added to the difficulty of the usual riding conditions of this course in the "south wing" of the French Alps. Tyre selection was crucial, and with Michelin on board Global Racing rode with the best. This meant that Global Racing riders had one less chance to have fun on their Orange bikes and to prove themselves, but they all gave their best in the downhill. Behind Missy's third, the men took seventh, eighth and 13th places to defend the team's number one position in the team ranking, and the riders now return home with peace of mind before the World Cup circus reunites in the first week of July in Grouse Mountain, B.C., Canada.

Missy Giove loved the fast downhill course in Vars. As always she aimed for the top and her prospects looked good when she finished second in the semi-final just under 1.5 seconds behind Anne-Caroline Chausson after coming off the bike... And then came the rain. With the best eight riders still at the start, conditions changed and the course became extremely slippery. "Monkey" Vasquez, her mechanic, moved swiftly to fit Michelin rain tires on her bike in just 7 minutes, and it might have been what at least brought her third place.  "The top part was like grease, I was going as fast as I could" said Missy... I am happy that my friend beat me, she trained with me," she added, referring to the 18-year old Briton Fionn Griffiths who started just before the rain fell and gratefully claimed second place. Consistent as ever, Missy now lies second overall in the World Cup standings.

Mick Hannah was again the hot story in the local press. In the semi-final he kept a low profile with 19th place, then stormed to the finish in his final run to occupy the coveted Hot Seat for the following 12 minutes. After that only six riders were faster that him. He was happy with his run, some of which took him through conditions quite alien to the youngster from Australia's tropical north: he was one of the few men to ride through a snow shower at the top of the course! "Snowflakes? Heaps of them, they were beating my face!" He grinned at the bottom. Mick is now eighth in the downhill World Cup standings.

Greg Minnaar was the second fastest Global Racing rider in downhill here, he finished eighth just two hundreds of a second behind Mick! If you can calculate how much that is in cm on a 2100 m course, please let us know! "I am happy since I was struggling in practice. I also lost a pedal in the rocks and wasn't able to get my foot back in for a while," said Greg, who now lies in the downhill World Cup standings. On Saturday the South-African had set the fastest time in Saturday's dual qualification, but he was modest about this achievement: "It was only against the clock, I still have a lot to learn in the dual's elimination."

Cesar Rojo was eighth in the semi-final and hoped to at least equal his world cup personal best: tenth from just one week ago. He was a bit slower and finished 13th after he has lost his pedals in the slippery dance for several times. The consistent "Red Devil" is now 10th in the downhill World Cup overall standings. This was the closest World Cup event to Cesar's home this season, so he hosted Friday night's theme party in the Global Village. Need a recipe for sangria? Just ask Cesar's mom!Marielle Saner was very fast in practice and was seventh in the semi-final. She had bad luck in the final when it started to rain just moments before her start time and she had to race on tires made for dry conditions. "On the first corners I got the impression that the grip was still good but I crashed twice lower down," said the disappointed Swiss rider.

For Markolf Berchtold the downhill was disappointing - although you could not tell this from his brave smile. He is always wishing for a wet race because that's what he always races at home in Brazil. This time his wishes were granted. He was ninth fastest in the semi-final just behind his team-mates Minnaar and Rojo. When the final came he made too many small mistakes and had to settle for a 19th place. On Friday he had a much easier competition to deal with when he held a dual slalom race for the youngsters from the local ski club.

Sean McCarroll didn't find the wet and cold conditions on the super-fast course too much to his liking. He was 17th in the semi-final and 20th in the final. If that is the worst he can do then the team is more than happy with "The Bomber". "I had a good run, I just ran into troubles once and almost crashed," he said at the finish line.

Naoki Idegawa spent his weekend on crutches following a crash last week in Maribor. Severely pulled ankle ligaments kept him off the bike although his will was strong and he took an easy ride down the downhill course on Friday... he loved the course. "His recovery is now more important, he will be back for Grouse Mountain," said the team's head soigneur Jim Pizzano.

Global Racing Team's manager Ben Monroe summed up the weekend: "We had a good day even if the girls had it difficult in the rain. We were happy to have Mick in the hot seat for some time, too bad that Markolf is a bit disappointed. I am happy we defended the first place in team ranking and that we got another podium which is always a success. We are looking forward to Grouse Mountain."
Bas de Bever 4th in World Cup Vars Saiz, Pascal and Beerten also in TOP 10 !!!!
Vars (Fra) – After a 6th place in last week’s World Cup race in Maribor, Slovenia, Bas de Bever got 4th in the second round of the UCI World Cup series in Vars, France. Oscar Saiz and Mickael Pascal finished in 6th and 10th place. Anneke Beerten got her best result
ever by finishing 10th. So all 4 Be One Team riders in Top 10 in this World Cup race!!!!!!!!
After a 6th place in the semi-final, Bas de Bever finished 4th in the final run and got a podium for Be One Team. “Last week in Maribor I just missed the top 5, but now I’m back on the podium which gives me a pleasant feeling and which is good for the Team. By shortening the length of the courses the differences between the riders are very small, one mistake and the victory is gone”, said De Bever after the race.
Oscar Saiz surprised with a 6th place, because he crashed hard in last week’s race in Vars and had some problems because of that. For Mickael Pascal a 10th place was all he could do after two crashes in his final run. For Anneke Beerten a 10th place was her
career best in the UCI World Cup series. “I’m still young and my results are getting better and better. I hope I can continue this throughout the rest of the season.
Bas de Bever and Anneke Beerten will compete for the National Title next week in Todnau, Germany, and together with the rest of the Be One Team they will travel to Canada and the US in the beginning of July for 3 races.

2001 CHEVY TRUCKS NORBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP MOUNTAIN BIKE SERIES

DOWNHILL MOUNTAIN BIKE RACING

BIG BEAR LAKE (Calif.), 3 June, 2001 - Today Marla Streb won the third Chevy Trucks NORBA National Championships Mountain Bike Series of her career, taking the first of the five-round 2001 nationwide series on the spectacular course at Snow Summit Mountain Resort. A powerful contingent of Australian men, led by the remarkable newcomer Mick Hannah, 17, riding for the equally remarkable Global Racing Team, swept the first three places in the men's race.

The 1.8-mile Snow Summit downhill course plummeted a dizzying 1,200 feet down the mountainside. With features including several big jumps - topped by a 40-foot double - the course was worthy of one of the world's largest and most famous downhill mountain biking events.

WOMEN'S REPORT

Marla Streb, San Geronimo, Calif. (Foes-Azonic) - the 2000 world championship bronze medallist - spent much of winter practicing on her moto-cross bike, which she said helped her prepare for the big jumps on this fast, dusty course. A head-on motorcycle collision with another motorcyclist on a local dirt trail only a week ago may have discouraged some riders, but this hardly seemed to phase Streb - who was unharmed in the accident - although it was not until the morning of the downhill final that she finally plucked up the courage to practice leaping across the 40-foot gap of the big double jump. With a clean and trouble-free run, she comfortably took the win. Streb's main rivals pre-race were 2000 national champion Missy Giove, Durango, Colo. (Global Racing), and 1998 national downhill champion Leigh Donovan, Capistrano Beach, Calif (Schwinn). Giove, who was hampered slightly from a painful crash in the Dual Slalom event of Saturday almost had an over-the-bars crash in the notorious 'Rock Garden' section on the upper slopes of the course, and may have lost time there to Streb. Streb was 3.9 seconds faster than Giove, who finished second.Third place was filled by Tara Llanes, Newport Beach (RPM-Yeti), who turned in a time 5.6 seconds slower than Streb. Donovan failed to find her best form and finished eighth.

QUOTES

1st place - Marla Streb, San Geronimo, Calif. (Foes-Azonic)"I felt this morning that I should be able to win if I didn't make any major mistakes.""I got the crash (with another motorcyclist) out of my system and didn't think about motorcycles at all today. I'm into bicycles now.""I came here two weeks ago to start acclimatizing. I stayed in a tent and trained for this event. I think being here for that long helped me today.""As soon as I managed to accomplish the double (jump), I felt really good about the course. I hadn't wanted to try it before this morning, but this morning I felt ready."

2nd place - Missy Giove, Durango, Colo. (Global Racing)"I took it easy at first, then ramped the pace up, but messed up the rock section and almost went over the handlebars. I kept on telling myself 'recover, recover' for the jumps.""I am happy not to have crashed. Second is not bad, and I'm more consistent than Marla Streb over the course of a season.""It's good to have the full support of a great team like Global Racing, that makes a lot of difference in being well prepared for an event."

3rd place - Tara Llanes, Newport Beach, Calif. (RPM-Yeti)"I really am satisified with 3rd on this course. At first the double jump was intimidating, and it took me four runs to do it, but this course was not as intimidating as some of the World Cup courses we have to race on, with huge wet rocks and tree roots. I thought this Big Bear course was really good - it was tough."

MEN'S REPORT

After appearing as an unknown at the 2000 Downhill Junior World Championships wearing baggy shorts and no body-armour protection - and then winning the silver medal - 17 year-old Mick Hannah has caused quite a stir in downhill mountain bike racing. At the Sea OtterClassic in March, he almost beat the great Brian Lopes, Laguna Beach (GT-Fox). This weekend, at the Chevy Trucks NORBA National Championships Mountain Bike Series, Hannah won both the Dual Slalom and the Downhill. With the increasing number of specialist riders these days, this is a rare achievement.

Hannah's team, the impressive new Global Racing Team, took three of the five podium places today. Hannah was almost beaten by his compatriot Nathan Rennie (RPM-Yeti), whose time of 3:15.24 was only 0.05 of a second slower than Hannah. Back in Australia Hannah grew up in Rennie's shadow, but the younger rider now appears to be coming into his own on the international scene. Third was another Australian, Chris Kovarik (Intense Cycles), with a time of 3:17.72. With two more Global Racing riders, Greg Minaar, Republic of South Africa, and Markholf Berchtold, Brazil, placing fourth and fifth respectively, the top USA finisher was John Waddell, Fairfield, Calif. (SunRace-Santa Cruz) in sixth place.

QUOTES

1st place - Mick Hannah, Australia (Global Racing) "My favorite part of the course was the jumps. I hit the doubles flat stick, it was such a good feeling flying free through the air.""I was excited when I first rode this course, I love this kind of terrain. I love the loose, dusty surface, it is so unpredictable, and that's what I love.""This is the best feeling I've ever had. I can't find words to explain it."

2nd place - Nathan Rennie, Australia (RPM-Yeti) "I feel great about second place, and congratulations to Mick Hannah.""It's a really good course for me - very dusty and difficult, in and out of ruts." "I'm just happy for Mick, and to have another Australian to meet on the podium." "I am intersted to see what he (Mick Hannah) is like on a really technical course."

3rd place - Chris Kovarik, Australia (Intense Cycles) "I was a bit nervous in my run because last year I had a big crash here right before the finish. I just concentrated on getting in clean.""One of my goals this year is to be more consistent. I've learnt every year to get more consistency. This comes with experience and more confidence."

BIG BEAR LAKE

BIG BEAR LAKE (Calif.), 2 June, 2001 - The 2001 SoBe Dual Slalom held at Snow Summit Resort in Big Bear, California, hosted one of the largest and most exciting mountain bike slalom races ever! Australia's Mick Hannah and Leigh Donovan of Mission Viejo, Calif. came out as the winners. As the first stop on the Chevy Trucks NORBA National Championship Mountain Bike Series, over 3000 spectators lined the side fence along easily the most challenging and technical race courses Team Big Bear has ever put together. A tight twisting course that left little opportunity for pedaling, and enormous opportunities for cornering, jumping, and berm shots.

Narrowing the huge field of over 100 of the world's top Pro men into a mere 32 qualifying slots set the stage for an exciting afternoon of heated action. From among the biggest names on the circuit, the newest faces on the scene would steal the limelight and stake themselves the top slots on the podium.

The Global Racing Team riders Mick Hanna and Greg Minnaar (Republic of South Africa) outraced names like Brian Lopes, Mission Viejo, Calif. (Team GT), Eric Carter, Temecula, Calif. (Mongoose Hyundai), 2000 world champion Wade Bootes, Australia, (Trek Volkswagen), and Dave Cullinan, (Oakley) on their way to ultimately facing each other in a final match that was decided inches from the finish lights. Mick taking the Championship round, with Greg in second, France's Michael Deldycke (Schwinn) placed third, and Bootes took fourth.

The Pro Women's field was led early on by another lightening fast green Global Racing jersey and an Orange mountain bike. Missy "The Missile" Giove came out fast in the early heats but took a hard crash in the semi-finals against Schwinn's Leigh Donovan. Donovan advanced into the finals to meet Jamis's fastest woman racer, Katrina Miller of Australia. Miller had overtaken Tara Llanes, Brea, Calif. (Yeti) in the semi and was well matched against Leigh going into the finals. Miller and Donovan took a win each, but it was Leigh who edged Miller by nearly a full second to the finish in the final run of the competition.

It was a full afternoon of racing action that was full of thrills, surprises, and upset as the sport's fastest and most well known men were skillfully eliminated by relatively unknown faces on a course that demanded all the handling a rider could reach inside and pull out. On the courses this sport has come to know it could have easily been Brian Lopes and Eric Carter in an all American final - instead today it was a 17 year-old Australian and a 19 year-old African who would raise the bar another notch for the Chevy Trucks NORBA National Championships Mountain Bike Series.

Quotes:

Men

1st place - Mick Hanna - "The course here at Big Bear couldn't have been better. I just loved the technical aspect of the course. I felt great on my runs and my bike was working great. We had a few problems with my Rock Shox earlier in the week but it all smoothed itself out."

2nd place - Greg Minaar - "The course here was great, not a pedaling course at all which is good because I'm not a peddler! The bike was working well though looking back I'd have done better to ride my (Orange) Patriot. More power to the ground in the corners and going against Mick you need every bit to catch him! I was glad that it was him I faced in the final. I'd have been too nervous if the final were against someone like Wade Bootes!"

Women

1st place - Leigh Donovan - "Of all my (career) wins, this was definitely the sweetest of them all!"

2nd place - Katrina Miller - "The course was great! Very technical and challenging. I felt really good out there today."
